Angela Merkel and other German Politicians targeted in major Cyber Attack

Private data and information from hundreds of German politicians including the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been stolen through a cyber attack. Subsequently information about the the mentioned politicians which included home addresses, phone numbers, letters, invoices and identity documents has been released, following the attack.

All information was released via Twitter in December but for a reason which is still unknown, the breach was discovered during the first days of the new year.

A Government spokesperson described this attack as a very serious one and stated that the Government is taking all necessary actions to make sure that such digital attack will be addressed  as soon as possible.

The German Justice Minister described this attack as one intended to damage confidence in democracy and in its institutions.

Apart from politicians, this leak also exposed information on journalists and celebrities.
