EUROPEAN CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGE

The Challenge

The Malta National Cybersecurity Challenge took place online between the 31st July 2021 and 1st August 2021. This 24-hour Challenge aimed to identify and recognize local talent between the age of 16 to 25. This event catered for all levels from Information Security aspirants to Information Security professionals already working in the field. The focus of the event was to instill the culture of information security within youths, to educate and ultimately to have fun.

Participants had the opportunity to register in groups of 1-4 members and were given 28 unique jeopardy style challenges to be solved. These teams had to solve security related tasks from domains such as web application security, network security, cryptography, exploitation, reverse engineering and forensics, amongst others.

On 1st August 2021, each team had to deliver a presentation on the tasks they had solved. Marks were allocated to technical expertise and presentation skills.

The winning team, Blink who was a one man team formed by Axel Curmi, was announced on the 2nd August and was given a €1000 prize voucher.

16 individuals were shortlisted from all participants and were invited for a physical interview at the MITA Data Centre, Santa Venera. These participants were further shortlisted to the below 12 participants to partake in the European Cybersecurity Challenge 2021 to be held in Prague, Czech Republic.

Science and Technology have always fascinated Andrew. Back in 2020, he graduated a first-class Degree in Chemical Engineering, and later began working with a local pharmaceutical company. After feeling that something was missing, he immediately took the decision of starting a Higher National Diploma in Computing. Following months of intensive hard work, he eventually ended up with Epic as a Junior Roaming Technician and so far, he is really enjoying this job exposure. As an individual, he is always looking for new challenges for the sole purpose of improving his IT skills and thus took this opportunity to learn more about cyber-security.

MALTA IN THE ECSC

In the past 3 years, Malta has been an observer in the European Cyber Security Challenge, and this is the first year where we will be participating.

The European Cyber Security Challenge is organised by ENISA and is one of the main events taking place in October, the month which the European Union dedicates for raising cyber security awareness. Given the high demand for cyber security expertise not being met by the low supply of graduates in the field, this European challenge aims at encouraging young people to pursue a career in cybersecurity. This European platform enables investment in capability building and facilitates connections with the industry. Considering that the cyber space has no boundaries, instilling and nurturing an interest in the cyber security field is essential both at a national and international level. In this respect Cyber Security Malta worked to deploy the national platform, the National Hacking Marathon, to complement the efforts being done at a European level.
